Potential Labour Disruptions at Port of Montreal

February 12, 2021ITN
Dear Valued Customer,

Many of you who rely on your cargo moving via Canada’s east coast ports, and the Port of Montreal in particular, remember that last August your cargo was delayed for weeks, and in some cases well over a month, due to labour problems in Montreal, between CUPE Local 375 and the Maritime Employers Association.  That 12-day strike only ended when the parties agreed to a 7-month truce, paving the way for Canada’s second largest port to reopen, and labour negotiations to re-start.
As the truce expires on Mach 21st, 2021, the talks continue with the assistance of a new team of federal mediators. We do not have information about the status of negotiations, and whether further labour actions will be averted.
Last August showed the vulnerability of Canada’s east coast marine and rail infrastructures, and therefore ITN is proactively reaching out, to suggest that now would be a good time to:

  1. Reevaluate your anticipated transport requirements through Montreal and other east coast ports, in the coming months, and engage with your ITN sales or operations contacts, to consider what options may be available to minimize disruptions to your supply chain.
  1. Contact your Member of Parliament and Cabinet Ministers, expressing the negative impact to your business and the Canadian economy, should the Port of Montreal suffer another shutdown.

ITN Logistics had earlier this week, written to the Prime Minister and many of his Ministers to voice our concerns on behalf of our customers and all Canadian Importers and exporters.  For your convenience, a sample letter as well as contact details for key Federal ministers, is available here.

Sincerely

 ITN Team
